Answer:

Shylock was a Jew who used to lend money to Christian merchants at high rates of interest. He did not have the feeling of mercy within himself. Many a times he was insulted by Antonio in the open market of Venice who called him a cut throat dog and spit on him. So, when Bassanio needed money urgently for which he and his friend Antonio went to the Jew for help, Shylock took the undue advantage of the situation and made a deal that if Antonio was unable to repay the three thousand ducats, then one pound of his flesh would be cut off from any part of his body that Shylock chooses. This even proves that Shylock was greedy, merciless and also heartless.
