SiCla is hydrolysed but CCla is not hydrolysed. Explain with reasons.

Answers
Answer:
CCl4 does not undergo hydrolysis by water because the carbon atom is small and is shielded by larger chlorine atoms.
Carbon does not have 3d atomic orbitals that water can use to form co-ordinate bonds.
In SiCl4, the silicon atom is larger than the carbon atom and also has available 3d atomic orbitals for bonding, thus hydrolysis is possible.
Given :
- SiCl4 is hydrolyzed but CCl4 is not hydrolyzed.
To find :
- The reason.
Explanation :
CCl4 does not hydrolyze but SiCl4 undergoes hydrolysis. This is because,
Carbon can't expand its octet but silicon can expand as there is presence of empty d orbital in case of Si but not in C.
Also, Silicon has a comparatively higher atomic size compared to Carbon.
SiCl4 has a larger central atom than CCl4.Hence, it is vulnerable to attack in hydrolysis.
The differing rates of hydrolysis are attributed to the greater atomic radius of the silicon atom allowing attack at silicon.
Reactions :
CCl4 + H2O → No hydrolysis
SiCl4 + 4H2O → Si(OH)4 + 4HCl
