let the diagonal of rectangle be x.

By Pythagoras theorem,

(√18m)²+ (√8m)² = x²

18m² + 8m² = x²

26m² = x²

x = √26m. = 5.09m

Therefore the diagonal of the rectangle nearest to the whole number is 5 metre.
