if we divide the rectangle into half the diagonal of the rectangle is the hypotenuse of the triangle formed by finding the hypotenuse of the right triangle we can find the diagonal of the rectangle.

let the diagonal of rectangle be x.

By Pythagoras theorem,

(√18m)²+ (√8m)² = x²

18m² + 8m² = x²

26m² = x²

x = √26m. = 5.09m

Therefore the diagonal of the rectangle nearest to the whole number is 5 metre.
