Significance of Act 1 with regard to Antonio and Portia's melancholy
Answers
Answer:
Act I is the beginning act of Merchant of Venice.
Explanation:
ANTONIO
We all know that the first scene starts with a melancholic Antonio, who doesn't know why he is sad. From this, we get to know of his character - that he is a melancholic guy, that instead of having all his happiness (apparently) he is sad, and no one knows the reason - and about his cargo laden ships.
PORTIA
In the same act, we also find out about Portia's issue on getting married - how her father has made the casket rule regarding her suitors. She is extremely selective about her suitors who have successfully chosen the wrong casket every time, and she describes every one of them in a sarcastic and humorous tone, except for Bassanio.
All this proves that this Act was an introductory phase of the entire play, telling us about every one's situations and explaining the basic story to us.
