Significance of Meiosis :

Meiosis maintains the number of chromosomes in a species constant generation after generation. By meiosis the number of chromosomes in sex cells or gametes is reduced to half. The fusion of haploid gametes at the time of fertilisation restores the normal diploid number in zygote and in the adult developing from the zygote. Thus, meiosis prevents duplication of chromosome due to fertilisation.

Meiosis causes mixing of maternal and paternal chromosomes in the gametes. The chromosomes of homologous pair separate out in the gametes randomly. So there is mixing of maternal and paternal chromosomes.

Meiosis causes mixing of maternal and paternal genes because of exchange of segments between nonsister chromatids of homologous chromosomes during crossing over. This results in recombination or new combinations of genes.
