Answer: It was started in 1973 by an NGO led by school teachers and the Kerala Sastra Sahithya Parishad(KSSP) to save the Silent Valley from being flooded by a hydroelectric project. The valley was declared as Silent Valley National Park in 1985.

Explanation:

Case study-

Long time ago, forest in Pallakkad district of Kerala was being destroyed by the hydroelectric project. The cause was the hydroelectric dam established by the Kerala state electricity board in the year of 1970. The dam was built on Kundhipuzha River which was running through silent valley. This project was affecting the biodiversity of the valley and rare animals like lion tailed macaque started dying and it could cause their extinction and this was also affecting the rain forest.

Impact-

Many local people fought against the stopping of the dam project. People and the NGOs put a pressure on the government through newspaper, campaign against the dam, awareness. At last this case reached in the court and other high offices and proved successful.
