The cause was the hydroelectric dam established by the Kerala state electricity board in the year of 1970. The dam was built on Kundhipuzha River which was running through silent valley. This project was affecting the biodiversity of the valley and rare animals like lion tailed macaque started dying and it could cause their extinction and this was also affecting the rain forest.

Silent valley is a people's movement aimed at saving the forest

Explanation:

  • Save the silent valley was a movement aimed to protect and conserve the silent valley which is an evergreen tropical forest located in Palakkad district of Kerala. The movement started in 1973 and was led by NGOs and school teachers.
  • After the announcement of the dam creation in the silent valley, the movement got into momentum and started a debate on the impact of forest life and biodiversity
  • As the concern was related to the endangered species, as a result, this area was later declared as a biosphere reserve.
  • As under the ecology protection act and the valley balance act of 1979. Which later led to the exclusion of the project from the area.  After some time a movie was also launched to make people aware of the impact of the ecosystem.
