Silicon doped with Galium forms p-type of semi conductor due to presence of a free bond.

p - type semiconductors :

These type of semiconductors are produced when a trivalent impurity is doped into a silicon or germanium crystal.

The major trivalent impurities used to make this type of semiconductors are the members of the Group 13 of Periodic Table.

  • Boron
  • Gallium
  • Aluminium

Silicon can form a maximum of 4 bonds. So , if a trivalent impurity is doped , three bonds are formed with silicon and one extra bond remains free due to deficiency of electrons.

Due absence of a particular bond in a specific place in the lattice of the crystal , holes are produced which act as charge carriers.
