The difference is though a very thin line. The silkworm on one hand is the caterpillars of moth (which can any of the various numbers present) that produce silk cocoons. On the other hand when the caterpillar stage can be categorized as silkworm the moth is called silk moth

Silk worms are nothing but caterpillars of silk moths that are wound in a form of a cocoon. The Cocoon are made up of silk. Silk Worm is also known as bombyx Mori are the worms that make silk.

The larva of Caterpillar of silk moths survive on leaves of a Mulberry plant and are completely human dependent nowadays for survival earlier they were found in wild.
