The first step involves washing the silkworm eggs that had stored
over the winter. These eggs are warmed to a temperature suitable for
hatching. This is known as incubation. After hatching the silkworm are
placed over mulberry leaves. These worms feed on the mulberry leaves
for 4-5 weeks continuously. At the end of this period they are ready to
Espin their cocoon. The worms climb on the branches and make their
cocoons out of the continuous thread. Taking about 8 days of process.

This is called spinning.
As soon as the cocoons are formed, they are gathered and put into boiling water. This kills
this insects inside and also dissolve the gummy substance in the cocoon. 4-8 such cocoon are
oined and combined with a number of other similar structures to make a thread that is wound on
a keel. This thread is raw silk and this process is called reeling or filature.
Use of silk:
1. Used for making clothes.
2. Used in parachutes, bulletproofjackets.
Weaving: The manual weaving methods have been replaced by automatic power looms in
nost of the countries.
