Silver gains a layer of sulphide when exposed to environment containing hydrogen sulphide and oxygen gas.

the following reaction takes place:

4Ag+2H₂S+O₂→2Ag₂S+2H₂O

This layer of sulphide due to corrosion of silver is black in colour and gradually results in dulling of its shine
