When the given material ( silver chloride) is exposed to sun, a chemical reaction takes place and it decomposes to form silver and produce chlorine gas. During the *decomposition reaction*, the white coloured silver chloride turns into grey ( the colour of ash) due to the formation of the silver. As the above reaction is delicate to light, these were used to create black and white photographs!
