Silver develops a blackish tarnish on its surface when it is exposed to air for a long period of time.
This is because the air has sulphur contained in it. Sulphur in atmosphere reacts with silver and it makes the silver go black in colour.
Near petroleums, the air has more amount of sulphur . Thus it blackens earlier.

Explanation :- As we know when silver comes in contact with sulfur containing gases it gets tarnish. And nowadays due to factories more sulfur is released in air so that's why silver is more likely to tarnish nowadays than 500 years ago.
