Sulphur is present in air in form of Sulphur dioxide, the fuel we burn in factories, cars, houses produces abundant of sulphur in the air. When silver comes in contact with the atmosphere it is very reactive with the sulphur present in the air in form of hydrogen sulphide, reacting to form silver sulphide (black color) and hydrogen.
Therefore, it is advised never to leave silver in the atmospheric gas, because of the presence of sulphur in the atmosphere.
