In magnetic materials, the electrons in the atoms spin in only one direction. This leads to the formation of negative and positive sides of the magnetic material. this makes the magnetic force flow from the north pole to the south pole.

This magnetic force creates a magnetic field around the magnetic material. Due to this field created by the magnetic force, like poles repel each other whereas the unlike poles attract each other.
