Most important are the many strikingsimilarities between prokaryotes (likebacteria) and mitochondria: Membranes — Mitochondria have their own cell membranes, just like a prokaryotic cell does. DNA — Eachmitochondrion has its own circular DNA genome, like a bacteria's genome, but much smaller.
