In a chemical reaction, there is a change in the composition of the substances in question; in a physical change there is a difference in the appearance, smell, or simple display of a sample of matter without a change in composition. Although we call them physical "reactions," no reaction is actually occurring

Similarities between physical and chemical changes are:
- In a physical change, only the physical properties such as shape, size, color, etc. are changed.
- In a chemical change, the chemical properties are changed such as basicity, acidity, etc.
Differences between Physical and Chemical changes are:
- Physical change is a temporary change while chemical change is a permanent change.
- In a physical change, no new substances are formed while in a chemical change new substances are formed.
- Physical changes are generally reversible changes while chemical changes are irreversible changes.
- Physical changes do not involve energy while chemical changes involve energy to form new compounds.
- Examples of physical changes are melting of ice, making chapati from the dough, etc.
- Examples of chemical changes are the burning of coal, rusting of iron, etc.
