Answer:

We all know that humans, monkeys and great apes are primates. Human beings and chimpanzees even share a common ape ancestor that lived 8-6 million years ago. We all know about opposable thumbs and the part it played in ape evolution. We all know this but how much else do we share with our fellow primates? Maybe humans and apes are closer than what we thought.

Studies show significant similarities between human and non-human primates in the behavioural and biological assessment of mental health conditions such as depression. While the underlying idea of these studies is to the advantage of people, they still offer a helpful understanding of what we share with great apes.

Like for humans, depression is usually identified with social isolation, altered social relationships, weight gain/loss and other typical stress related behaviours. Although we cannot have definitive grasp of apes’ moods or thoughts, it is fairly clear that the model of depression for both human beings and great apes goes far beyond neurobiological homogeneities. Drawing on studies in part similar to Harlow’s, scientists are confident that the criteria to study depression in humans and non-human primates can merge into a more complete understanding of psychiatric disorders.
