Similarities between globalization and westernization

Globalization is simply the integration of trade over the borders of nation-states. Westernization implies the acceptance or imposition of western ideas, western values, western purposes, etc.
The confusion is derived from the fact that the industrial revolution began in western civilization (and, more narrowly yet, in England), and the representatives of western civilization used industrialization as a competitive advantage in imposing their influence elsewhere in the world. Thus industrialization often came to regions of the world along with westerners and western ways, and many of the economic patterns established by the “first mover” advantage that western civilization possessed at one time have persisted into contemporary efforts to improve the integration of trade across regions once separated by distance, geographical obstacles (mountains, oceans, etc.), and cultural differences.

There is no doubt that globalization is changing and influencing other cultures and societies. But to say that globalization is simply a synonym to westernization and therefore homogenizing culture is not to asses the entire situation critically.
