Well Jim is a boy helping his mother in a little Inn and Silver is a seasoned pirate of the high seas. They are both pretty flat characters. The boy is essentially good and Silver is bad. I hate to put it in those terms but, although a great book, this is escape fiction. Silver is animated and manipulative where as Jim is a boy looking for adventure. Jim is loyal where Silver is crook. Come on he's a pirate!

He gradually became a noticeably detesting villain as as success diverged into evil. However, Jim was able to come out in possession of goodwill with good luck, he was the hero who countered Silver’s attempts
