Answer:
Although there are differences between polyp and medusa, still they are strictly homologous as they are formed in the same fundamental pattern. Homology and similarity in the structure of polyp and medusa can also be explained by the fact that one can easily be derived from the other.
E.g. when a polyp is inverted, its tentacles and manubrium are directed in a downwards direction. On pulling out the tentacles, a disc-like shape forms. On compressing the basal region of the disc, a cup-shaped or umbrella-shaped form of medusa occurs.
Explanation:
Few other similarities can be listed as follows-:
- Both have a Radially symmetrical body.
- Body wall of both organisms is diploblastic.
- Both are carnivorous.
- The mouth and manubrium of medusa are homologous to the mouth and hypostome of the polyp.
- Anus is absent in both organisms.
- The gastrovascular cavity of polyp is homologous to the stomach, radial canals, and circular canals of medusa.
- The convex outer surface of the umbrella of medusa corresponds to the base of hydranth.
