The English East India Company and The French East India Company were formed to gain profits from trade with India. The English East India Company was formed in 1600 by a royal charter. The French Company was formed in 1664 by a charter issued by King Louis XIV.

Both of them took advantage of the weak political conditions in India and started intervening in the Indian political affairs. They forged alliances with the local rulers and took up a number of wars to gain control over more territories and increase their trade.
