Both sperm cells and egg cells contain a haploid nucleus, this means that they contain half the number of chromosomes of a normal diploid cell. This is so that when the egg is fertilised by the sperm there are 46 chromosomes and it becomes a diploid nucleus.

Similarities between sperm and egg cells are:-

1)Both sperm and ova are produced by meiosis

2) Sperm and ova both are used for reproduction.

  • Sperm and ova both being reproductive cells combine to form another generation.

3)Both sperm and ova have the same no. Of chromosomes ( haploid)

4)Both can survive for a very short period after the release.

  • Sperm is viable for 72hrs whereas ova is viable for approx 48hrs.
