Anne and Margot, the two sisters were as different as chalk and cheese. While Margot was the conventional, dutiful and obedient elder sister, Anne was the rebellious, independent and vociferous younger sibling. Margot was a delicate girl who spoke little, she was similar to her mother in terms of temperament and disposition while Anne found herself suited to her father's characteristics. She liked to take charge of things while Margot was content in being on the sidelines. However, both the sisters exhibit a strain of resilience and remarkable courage in dealing with the situation. Anne and Margot's relationship in the beginning of the novel is full of conflict because Anne cannot bear to be constantly compared and contrasted against her studious and dedicated sister but gradually we see a softening of her stance and they come to a kind of truce. They learn to understand each other's differences and bond of fellow feeling develops between the two.
