.This September, MFI was launched to create local awareness for criminal-landlord Mark Fortune, who exploits and harasses tenants and neighbours alike, and shows little regard for the law. The aim was to gather evidence and testimonies, understand the true scale of his operations and begin a dialogue with the council and police on how to address issues of intimidation, exploitation and fraud highlighted in these testimonies.

Two months have passed, and the investigation has completely exploded! Our findings have been eye- opening. So far, we have had over a hundred people contact us with stories and received 45+ questionnaire responses from tenants. The level of illegality is much greater than imagined. His property empire seems to be expanding into Glasgow and he has other businesses such as used car dealerships.

A disturbing image is emerging here, and a lot needs to be addressed. Luckily, we are collaborating with the wonderful Living Rent Edinburgh Branch, and, together, amongst other things, we are running a campaign to empower and unite Fortune’s tenants who are duped into believing that they don’t have rights, which is not the case! We are educating them on their rights, providing them with practical advice, offering free legal aid (if needed), as well as access to relevant police officials and council members. Furthermore, we are engaging with the council and police to ensure that Mark Fortune abides by necessary legislations, and that tenant are given the legal protection that he denies to them!
