Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) is an Indian social movement led by indigenous tribes (adivasis), activists,  fishermen, & human rights campaigners in the Narmada Valley, against many large dam projects across river Narmada  that occupies the states of Madhya Pradesh,  Maharashtra, & Gujarat. Tawa Matsya Sangh (TMS) is a Fishworkers Cooperative Federation. It is an organization which is fighting for the rights of forest displaced inhabitants of the Satpura forest, in Madhya Pradesh.

Explanation:

  • Before reaching the Narmada in Hoshangabad, the Tawa River passes through Betul. It comes from the Mahadeo hills of the district of Chindwara. Work was begun in 1958 and completed in 1978 on building the Tawa dam. It has caused large areas of forest and agricultural land being submerged. Forest inhabitants' lives also have been reduced to nothing. Some of the displaced people settled around the reservoir.  They have found a new livelihood source. They began fishing besides their meagre farms.
  • The Government granted private contractors the fishing rights in the Tawa reservoir in 1994. These contractors have driven local people away so that they can obtain cheap labour. The henchmen of the contractors threatened those villagers, who resisted to leave. The village villagers were united at this point and decided to establish a rights defense organization. The Tawa Matsya Sangh (TMS) formed as a result. Through rallies and jams (the blocking of highways), the TMS demanded their right to continue fishing for livelihood.
  • The history to the NBA activism started in the 1960s and early 1970s, when the government of India sponsored the construction of the dam as a path to modernisation. Using the water from the river was to provide food, irrigation and power production in poor regions. However, hundreds of thousands of civilians would be displaced because of this
  • Activists were seeking assistance through the NBA for the poor and needy due to the construction of the Sardar Sarovar and other major dams alongside Narmada. The NBA movement includes legal hearings, hunger strikes, marches and sponsorship from prominent figures from film and art.
