▶Hobbes. The Leviathan.  Makes dictatorship possible.  Only responsibility of the sovereign is security--the life of the individual.  

▶Rousseau.  The Social Contract.  Each person gives up absolute freedom for the common good.

▶Locke.  Second Treatise on Civil Government It was used as a model for our Constitution.  In fact, our own Constitution borrowed "life, liberty, and property" but instead chose "life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness."
