1. The Parliament of Britain sent a group of 7 MPs in the year 1928 to study legal reforms and present recommendations to the state.

2. Indian Statutory Commission was the original name of this commission but it is most popularly known as the Simon Commission because Sir John Simon presided over this commission.

3. The Commission was formed only with the British members and thus it did not have even a single Indian included in it.

4. The Indian people took it as an insult and opposed the commission. The Congress Party, as well as the Muslim League both, opposed the commission.

5. Consequently, when the Commission landed India on February 1928, there were mass demonstrations black flag protests and hartals throughout the country. In fact, the people of India chanted the slogan ‘Simon Go Back.’
