ethanal and propanal can be distinguished by iodoform test in which ethanal will react as it has alpha methyl group whereas propanal does not have any alpha methyl group and hence doent not give reaction

Iodoform Test ;

  • Yellow ppt of iodoform will be formed from Ethanal on heating with iodine solution and sodium hydroxide solution .
  • There will be no reaction when Propanal is treated with the same reagents .

only one aldehyde group (i.e., Ethanal) from all can give reaction to Iodoform (Holoform) Test .
