3x + 5y = 30

3x = 30 - 5y

x = (30 - 5y)/3

Putting in second equation

5*(30 - 5y)/3 - 3y = 16

150 - 25y - 9y = 16 * 3

- 34y = 48 - 150

- 34y = - 102

y = - 102/- 34

y = 3

Solving for x

x = ( 30 - 5 * 3 )/3

x = (30 - 15)/3

x = 15/3

x = 5

Hope this helps
