It's a tricky one, because it's either -1 minus negative seven, -1 minus negative three, or if you have to change the signs when the parenthesis is preceded by a minus sign like I think I was told by my math teachers, it's -1 minus 29. In addition(…), some of my math teachers felt that minus signs cancelled each other out, so that -1 - 29 would be 28, whereas others felt that minus meant you moved left on the number line so that it's -30.

I can't believe I've gone this long without knowing this. I can't believe math teachers can't agree on basic arithmetics. The basest of the basest. I think math is broken.
