Simplify the following.

(a + b) {}^{2}  +  {(a - b})^{2}

Let us first simplify the first expression.

 {a}^{2}  +  {b}^{2}  + 2ab

Now let us simplify the next expression

 {a}^{2}  +  {b}^{2}  - 2ab

Now add both of the expressions

 {a}^{2}  +  {b}^{2}   + 2ab +  \:  {a}^{2}  +  {b}^{2}  - 2ab

2ab and -2ab will get cancelled because they have opposite signs.

Hence the answer would be,

2( {a}^{2}  +  {b}^{2} )
