If

sin(α)cos(α) = 1/2
then,
2sin(α)cos(α) = 1

Now, sin(α) + cos(α) = X (let)
Squaring both sides,

{sin(α) + cos(α)}² = X²
I. e. sin^²(α) + cos^²(α) +2sin(α)cos(α) = X²
1 + 1 = (X)²
X = √2
or,

Sin(α) + Cos(α) = √2

If, Sin(α)Cos(α) = 1/2
