Since the atomic weights of carbon, nitrogen and

oxygen are 12, 14 and 16 respectively, among the

following pairs of gases, the pair that will diffuse at

the same rate is :

(1) Carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide

(2) Carbon dioxide and nitrogen peroxide

(3) Carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide

(4) Carbon dioxide and nitric oxide

a) Carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide.

Explaination:-

The molar mass of carbon dioxide CO2 is 12+16+16=44g/mol

The molar mass of nitrous oxide N2O is 14+14+16=44g/mol

Thus, both carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide have equal molar masses.

The rate of diffusion is inversely proportional to its molar mass.

When the molar mass of two gases is same, their rates of diffusion is same.
