Since the quadratic formula gives two answers can it be used for solving questions with laws of motion.
For ex- s(displacement) = 5m, u = 2m/s, g = 10m/s.
To find t(time) we use the s = ut + 1/2gt^2. We get 5 = 2t + (1/2 x 10t^2)
5 = 2t + 5t^2
which can be written as 5t^2 + 2t - 5 = 0
This is a quadratic equation and thus the quadratic formula can be used. But it gives 2 values and only one can be the answer. So my question basically is, can the quadratic formula or other ways to solve a quadratic equation be used to find the value of t(time), if yes how?
