About the book

How has Singapore contributed to the world and how it has it learned from the world over the last fifty years? What does today’s student generation think about international politics? What are their burning socio-economic issues? What does every-day living in Singapore mean to them? Students from the Singapore Management University (SMU), comprising Singaporeans and exchange students from all continents offer perspectives from business, arts and politics. Looking from inside and outside Singapore, a large diversity of views is presented on this interaction and how Singapore fits into the world stage.

The collection of writings in this book, Ahead and Behind, reflects how local and exchange students view developments in Singapore in a wider context. Singapore’s achievements, especially in the past half century, have been extraordinary. Whether it is “ahead or behind” other places will depend on the values and criteria we use to evaluate what a good society is or should look like

Reviews

In 2011 a study confirmed adage that with age comes wisdom. This splendid book tells that the opposite is the case. Essays authored by 36 students give a deep insight in how young people reflect on themes, issues, and ideas. It gives confidence in the young generation and young people’s insight in societal evolution. The essays (23) leaves me more optimistic about the future than before. And that is a prize well worth looking for!

– Joergen Oerstroem Moeller, Visiting Senior Fellow, ISEAS Yusof Ishak Institute, Singapore.

Adjunct Professor Singapore Management University & Copenhagen Business School.

“Much has been said about Singapore’s economic achievement, but few explore how Singapore’s internationalism creates idiosyncrasies that play out in her people. This book presents a rich chronicle of Singapore and Singaporeans, bravely exploring contradictions such as mandatory volunteerism, preferential treatment between supposedly equal races, and saving culture within a logic of economy efficiency. It is a delightful read, and certainly more insightful than any Bib Gourmand guide to Singapore (Chapter 8).”

– Benjamin Goh, Singaporean graduate of an American university.

“Ahead and Behind is a timely book that succinctly captures the essence of the key issues of the day in Singapore. It gives readers a good feel for social, political and cultural developments in the country, and does so in a language and style that will appeal to young and old alike, Singaporeans as well as non-Singaporeans.”
