All mushrooms are members of the class of fungi, and in fact representatives of the class called Basidiomycota. They reproduce by spores that are produced in a structure that you call a mushroom. All fungi are living organisms. They have a closer affinity with animals than with higher plants, and some affinity with various forms of bacteria. They metabolise or break down various organic materials to create their own energy as distinct from those organisms that create their own energy by photosynthesis or chemosynthesis. They are effectively scavengers and recyclers in the environment, and they are very good at it. Without fungi forests would be choked to death in short order, and nutrients would not be made available for new growth.
