The commander-in-chief of the nawab Mir Jafar was bribed by Robert Clive who was a British governor. He promised  Mir Jafar that he will make him the Nawab of Bengal, if he helps him defeat the Nawab.

Hence, Mir Jafar betrayed Nawab and helped Clive. Thus, Clive defeated Nawab in the battle of Plassey in 1757. Calcutta was captured by the governor.
