Sister Nivedita was a great follower of Swami Vivekananda. Her actual name was Margaret Elizabeth Noble and she was a Christian of Scots-Irish origin. She converted to Hinduism after meeting Swami Vivekananda who changed her name to Nivedita. She first learnt about the value of service to mankind from her father. Sister Nivedita was closely associated with the Ramakrishna Mission and was very intimate to Sarada Devi.

It was in November 1895 that Sister Nivedita met Swami Vivekananda in London for the first time. He was explaining Vedanta philosophy to an affluent family. More than the discourse, it was His personality that drew the Swami towards her. He answered all her queries that made Sister Nivedita develop faith and reverence in Him. Sensing the pain of Indian women in the society, Swami Vivekananda chose Sister Nivedita for educating them.
