sita has pens &pencils which togother are 40 in number .if she had 5 more pencils & 5less pens, the number of pencil would have become 4 times the number of pens .find the original number of pens and pencils with sita

Let the number of pens be "x"
Let the number of pencils be"y"
According to the question, 
x+y = 40

5 more pencils means = y+5
5 less pens means = x-5

Now, 
x-5+y+5 = 4 (number of pens) = 4x
⇒ x-y = 4x
⇒ -y = 3x
⇒ y = -3x -----------------------1

substitute 1 in the first equation
x+y = 40
⇒x -3x = 40
⇒-2x = 40
⇒ x = 20 

∴ the number of pens with sita are 20.

substitute the value of "x" in 1 we get, 
y = -3(x)
⇒ y = -3(20)
⇒ y = -60 

∴ there were 60 pencils with sita and 20 pens.
