TCA cycle in aerobic bacteria occurs in the plasma membrane.

  • The electron transport chains of bacteria occur in the plasma membrane because mitochondria are missing in prokaryotes. Some bacterial electron transport chains correspond to the mitochondrial electron transport chain.
  • The electron transport chain of bacteria transports electrons from NADH and here NADH is the electron donor to acceptors and shifts protons (H+) across the plasma membrane identical to the mitochondrial electron transport chain, it is relatively varied from the latter in its formation. E. coli transport chain is small, contains two branches cytochrome d branch and cytochrome o branch, and a relatively distinct arrangement of cytochromes.
  • Coenzyme Q ubiquinone holds electrons and provides them to both limbs, but the limbs govern under various transition conditions.
