The younger generation that is Wilhelmine and Peterkin are innocent they consider the war to be futile and lose lose situation. The winning side also suffers while the losing side also suffers.

The older generation that is Old Kasper's opinion is that it was a great and famous victory though it was not. He is symbolic of the ignorant public who blindly believes what they are told and thus not try to find what is the truth.
