Answer:

Labour will already have begun in almost all cases when you are called to a woman’s home or when she arrives at your Health Post. One of the most critical assessments you have to make in Labour and Delivery Care is at the time when you first attend a labour. Rapid early assessment is required so that you can decide on the care needed for the labouring mother, in case immediate referral or emergency measures are required. If all is well, you need to take the woman’s history in detail and conduct a physical examination in order identify the stage of labour that she has reached, and discover any information from her history that may affect the progress or outcome of her labour. This study session builds on the assessment and history-taking skills you developed during your study of the Antenatal Care Module.

Given Situation:

Your mother is in critical condition while laboring your youngest sibling and according to the doctor only one has the chance to survive. Because of this, the doctor is asking you to decide as to who should be kept alive.

STAND/POSITION:

My sibling would be my first choice for this post.

EXPLANATION:

Yes, this means we'll lose our mother, who gave birth to us and raised us, but being independent and coping with our loss is preferable to having my mother criticize me for my decision; my mother would be furious if I chose her over my sibling. But I couldn't make a choice based on who I love the most, because I adore them all.

EVIDENCE:

My mother had always expected me to cherish and care for my siblings. If she ever leaves, my mother makes it plain that I should priorities my siblings over everything else, and that she is willing to give up everything for her children, so why should I break the vow I made to her? As a result, I'd rather keep my word and select my sibling instead.

CONCLUSION:

Finally, if I had to choose between my mother and my younger sibling, I would chose my younger sibling.
