Explanation:

Let the age of Mahesh 6 years ago = x - 6

Let the age of Suresh 6 years ago = y - 6

Give that,

6 years ago, Mahesh was twice as old as Suresh.

that is,

                   x - 6 = 2(y - 6)

                   x - 6 = 2y - 12

                   x = 2y - 6

let the above equation be equation 1

Given that, the ratio of present ages = 9/5

                  x/y = 9/5

                  5x = 9y

let the above equation be equation 2

multiply equation 1 by 5

                   5x = 10y - 30

let the above equation be equation 3

From equation 2 and 3

                      9y = 10y - 30

                       y = 30

Substitute the value of y in equation 1

we get,

                 x = 2(30) - 6

                 x = 60 - 6

                 x = 54

The difference between their present ages = 54 - 30 = 24
