In an ideal solution, γi = 1, and μiE = 0 for all components. If γi < 1, then μiE < 0, and from Eq. (4.36), Δμi < Δμiideal. That is, the component i is more stable in the solution than it would be in an ideal solution of the same composition. If γi > 1, then μiE > 0, and the driving force for the component to enter into solution is less than in the case of an ideal solution.
