The DNA and RNA carry all the genetic information. It is expressed in the form of proteins which are made up of 20 different types of amino acids.

Explanation:

Genetic code:-

George Gamow coined the term genetic code.

  • He argues that since there are only 4 bases and if they have to code for 20 amino acids, the code should constitute a combination of bases.
  • He suggested that to code for all the 20 amino acids, the code should be made of 3 nucleotides. This was a very bold proposition because a permutation combination of 4 \times 4 \times 4 would generate 64 codons, generating many more codons.
  • The chemical method developed by Har Govind Khorana was instrumental in synthesising molecules with defines combination of bases

The figures give the codon for the various amino acids.
