Explanation:

                           Character sketch of Padma

Padma was Saleem’s loving ,caretaker and companion. She was the audience for his narrative  and  she  becomes his fiancée at the end of the novel. Padma represented the antithesis to Saleem’s magical, exuberant, and freewheeling narration. As a rhetorical device, she allowed Rushdie  and gave the chance to acknowledge explicitly any  frustrations  which the reader may feel in response to the novel. Often she use to express doubts  to the veracity of Saleem’s account so she  hurries the narrative along, imploring Saleem to get on with the plot rather than veering off into tangents.

She was the practical voice of criticism as  she was there to counteract its  extreme tendencies, she supports the novel’s more willfully . Saleem’s  interruptions, self-obsession and digressions, and Padma’s expressions of doubt and frustration created a  holistic reading experience. Rushdie is able to move beyond them because of the difficulties of the narrative.
