Ans)The narrator, a girl of 12, had an appointment with the dentist in London one day. She was accompanied by her mother. After the dental treatment was over, both went to a cafe. While the mother had a cup of coffee, the girl enjoyed a banana split. They came out of the cafe at six. By then it had begun to rain. The mother realized that the rain would not stop soon. So they decided to take a taxi to go back home. Though many taxis passed by, all were occupied with passengers. The mother kept looking out for a vacant taxi. Meanwhile they both got wet.

Ans) A little old man approached the mother and her daughter who were waiting for a cab. He told them that he had forgotten his purse at home. So he wanted money to go home in a taxi. He would like to sell them his umbrella in return for taxifare back to his home. The mother offered to drop him at his home or give money to the taxi fare. But, he refused both the options. He had a silk umbrella with him. He offered them to buy just for one pound. The mother suspected something rotten and irrational about him. But, her 12 year-old daughter snubbed her mother and asked to try to help him. owing to his persistence request, the mother gave him one pound and took the umbrella. But, the man was such a drunkard that he went to a pub and drank for the whole pound. Thus we find him not only as a heavy drunkard but also a man of dishonesty and of stealing nature.
