Skywave propagation is based on the reflection of electromagnetic waves.

When the electromagnetic waves hit the ionosphere containing ions are reflected back towards the surface of the earth.

Thus through this the skywave propagation takes place.

Sky wave propagation is based on reflection of electromagnetic waves.

  • In earth atmosphere, the ionosphere is from a height of 65 km to 400 km.
  • The air molecules get ionised by absorbing ultraviolet light and other high energy radiations coming from the sun.
  • The ions in the ionosphere can reflect electro magnetic waves of frequency range from 2 MHz to 30 MHz only.
  • The higher frequency em waves penetrate through ionosphere.
  • That is why, sky wave propagation cannot be used for TV and mobile phones.
