Slaked lime is a base.
So when it is added to the ACIDIC waste of factories it turn it neutral which makes it safe to discharge it in rivers



It has to be added so the aquatic life is not affected

Slaked lime is added to factory waste to neutralise the acidity of the acids present in it. If factory waste is discharged into water bodies  without being treated can cause harm to fish and other aquatic animals.
